About the opportunity
Sometimes, we go on day trips and have interactive workshops e.g. cake decorating and silk-painting. Mostly, we invite guest speakers from other charities and organisations to tell us about their services and to give us free health and wellbeing advice to help improve the lifestyles of our attendees.
Although we have a regular British Sign Language intepreter for our Deaf BSL users, we no longer have anyone to help interpret from English to Gujarati and so we are looking for a friendly volunteer (male or female, of any age) to help us. If you can spare 2 hours every 2 weeks then please get in touch as we’d love to hear from you.
Specific tasks for include: interpreting and translating for a small group of Gujarati-speaking hard of hearing attendees, helping the Action Deafness staff make cups of tea and coffees and befriending other attendees.
What are we looking for?
Desirable, but not essential: Deaf Awareness Training and a basic knowledge of BSL (British Sign Language).
N.B. Basic Deaf Awareness Training can be given on registration.
The coffee morning meets every fortnight on a Thursday morning, between 10am and 12 noon.
It is held at the St Matthew’s Centre, 10 Malabar Road, Leicester, LE1 2PD. The building is light blue on the exterior and is noticeable.
Car parking is on-street only and is available, but limited.
Or, via public transport, the centre can be reached from Leicester City Centre by taking number 21 First Bus towards Blount Road, and alighting at the St Matthew’s Estate.
