Should we embrace AI and Sign Language in the UK?

Hello everyone, and welcome to this edition of my CEO Blog!

I’m Craig Crowley, the CEO of Action Deafness. Today, I want to talk about AI and its potential to enhance sign language communication for the Deaf community in the UK.

AI is becoming more prominent in our lives. It’s on our phones and even in some washing machines.

So, what does this mean for Deaf organisations and the use of sign language?

Opportunities for Growth?

AI technology has the potential to help Deaf and hearing people communicate.

AI-driven applications will be able to translate spoken language into sign language in real-time.

This will increase inclusion and promote understanding between Deaf communities and the wider hearing public.

Challenges to Consider?

There are a number of concerns regarding this new technology. We need to consider data privacy and who designs and controls these products.

Some organisations may see AI communication solutions as a way to reduce face-to-face interpreting. This may not be good for all sign language users.

It’s vital to strike a balance between using technology and preserving the essential human connections that form the core of our community.

Collaboration and Engagement?

Organisations like the BDA, RNID, NDCS have recently started conversations about AI. They have highlighted the importance of collaboration.

I agree that it is vital that Deaf perspectives are integrated into the design process of AI products.

As an example, I have been involved in Signapse’s Deaf Advisory Board to support the organisation and provide a Deaf perspective.

We need more Deaf individuals to engage with organisations and help them design their products well from the start. Then, we can ensure that AI advancements genuinely meet the needs of the community.

Looking Ahead

The emergence of AI presents an exciting opportunity for Deaf organisations in the UK. By embracing this technology thoughtfully and inclusively, we can enhance communication, learning and the overall quality of life for Deaf, Deafblind and Hard of Hearing individuals.

As technology moves quickly, I encourage all of us to engage in these discussions and find opportunities to promote the needs of the Deaf community.

Thank you for watching and I look forward to sharing more insights with you soon.

See you in the next CEO Blog.
