“Deaf Extracare at Home” is Action Deafness’ brand, provides long term, unprecedented, vision. A specialist provision, delivered by Deaf people, for Older Deaf people living in their own homes in the UK.
Deaf and hard of hearing people who live in their own homes will be supported to continue living in safe, accessible and familiar environments. Communication needs will be met, and Deaf culture will be preserved and celebrated.
Older Deaf people will be supported to live independently in their own homes, while maintaining their own chosen lifestyles and positively nurturing their health and wellbeing. Tailored, Deaf-specific, personal and care support will be delivered, as necessary, during the latter stages of Older Deaf people’s lives.
The UK’s Older Deaf population is growing swiftly. By 2035, the population of Deaf British Sign Language users, over the age of 65, is expected to reach between 11,500 and 26,680, with numbers of Deaf people aged over 85 estimated at between 2,500 and 5,800.
Over the next decade, an increase in the UK’s general older population will heighten demand for personal care and support for people within their own homes. However, hard to cater for groups, like Deaf people, are likely to be marginalised as the general ageing population puts ever increasing pressure on the care sector.
