Sensory Support

Empowering you through Specialist Sensory Support

At Action Deafness, our Sensory Support offers a range of support, resources and training for Deaf, Deafblind, Hard of Hearing, Blind, and people with sight loss. Our aim is to enhance your independence and quality of life, empowering you to navigate daily life with confidence. We offer a free needs assessment upon referral.

Carla's Story

Action Deafness supported Deafblind Carla (40s, Autism) in her transition to independent living (due to reduced parental support) by partnering with housing for an adapted apartment and providing Communicator Guide Support. This improved her daily living and wellbeing through community and relationships.

Dave's Story

My local Deaf charity was having problems providing care services to my wife. Action Deafness stepped in to support the charity and brought a completely new way of working.

Rose's Story

I felt isolated living in a hearing community. Now I have a Specialist Support Worker (SSW) who I can sign with, who helps me get on with my life as normal and helped me arrange a meeting with my son, it was emotional!

What We Offer

Our Sensory Support aims to meet each person's unique needs through comprehensive support and resources.

Our team is skilled in hands-on signing and the Deafblind manual alphabet, and can provide tailored communication methods to meet each person's unique needs.

Support Includes:

  • Accessing information and community services, such as medical appointments, hobbies, shopping, and opportunities.

  • Developing communication skills with others.

  • Building confidence and empowering personal and social independence.

  • Day-to-day communication, travel and mobility assistance.

Enablement Officers

Our Enablement Officers provide tailored support to individuals to improve independence, confidence, and overall wellbeing in their daily lives. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, empowering support that enables people to achieve their personal goals and live fulfilling lives.

Communicator Guides

Our Communicator Guides usually work with people who have an acquired dual sensory loss, i.e. develop either or both hearing or sight loss in adulthood.

Our Communicator Guides promote independence by providing personalised support, empowering Deafblind and people with sight loss to carry out daily tasks, and supporting them with communication where necessary, to access services in the community.

Intervenor Services

Our Intervenors usually work with children and adults who were born Deafblind, often with other complex needs. They work with them and their family or carers to develop effective communication methods and support access to their environment and community.

Intervenors provide support both at home and in the community. A key part of the role is supporting and developing communication skills, promoting independence, and encouraging personal and social development. They work alongside schools and professionals such as speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, and social workers to make sure care plans are inclusive and right for each person.

Additional Services:

  • Information, support, and guidance: Practical advice and support, helping you access resources suited to your needs. This can include assistance with navigating medical appointments, social occasions, and important tasks.

  • Rehabilitation and training: Tailored programmes that build essential skills for daily living.
