"This week at Naidex at the NEC Birmingham, I had the privilege of delivering a keynote on how Deafness is not a barrier - but a powerful driver of innovation.

For too long, Deaf people have been seen as passive recipients of support.

But the reality is very different.

Deaf communities have been at the forefront of communication innovation for decades - from early adoption of text messaging and video communication, to shaping the future of AI-powered accessibility.

At Action Deafness, we see this every day.

Through Deaf-led leadership, co-production, and digital transformation, we are not just improving access - we are redefining how services are designed, delivered, and experienced.

A few key reflections from the session:

What struck me most was the growing recognition across sectors that inclusion and innovation go hand in hand.

The conversation is shifting - from “how do we support Deaf people?” to “what can we learn from Deaf innovation?”

If we get this right, the next generation of Deaf children won’t see themselves as needing access - but as leaders shaping the digital future.
